Shocking Updates: Philadelphia Phillies Announces the Departure of Two Top Rising Stars Despite Staying Past Trade Dealine…

The Phillies announced the release of two minor league players yesterday.

Lehigh Valley parted ways with third baseman Nick Podkul and left-handed pitcher Taylor Lehman.

Podkul was originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 7th round of the 2018 draft out of Notre Dame. He reached Triple-A Buffalo before being released in August 2022.

The Phillies signed him as a minor league free agent in December 2022, assigning him to Reading for the 2023 season and later promoting him to Lehigh Valley. While he performed well at both levels last season, he has struggled this year.

Lehman was drafted by the Miami Marlins out of high school in the 34th round of the 2014 draft but chose to attend Penn State instead. He went undrafted in 2018 and was signed by the Phillies as an undrafted free agent in June 2018.

Lehman showed strong metrics as he progressed through the system. This season marks the end of his seven-year commitment, and he was set to become a free agent at the end of the season.
