Red Sox manager Alex Cora has shared an important update on infielder Vaughn Grissom, who has been sidelined since June 2 due to a right hamstring strain. This marks his second extended stint on the injured list this season.
Grissom has been on a rehab assignment with first baseman Triston Casas in Triple-A Worcester since July 20. Before Boston’s game against the Kansas City Royals, Cora mentioned that he’s been informed about Grissom’s progress in terms of performance and defense.
“He’s moving much better compared to earlier in the season, which is a great sign,” Cora stated. “He’s been working on his strength, his range has improved, his first step is quicker, and his defensive plays have been more consistent. Offensively, he feels like he’s hitting the ball harder, which is also positive.”
Grissom’s rehab stint in the minors is limited to 20 days, after which the Red Sox must decide whether to call him up. With an off day on Thursday, Grissom might rejoin the team for their homestand starting against the Houston Astros on Friday.
The Red Sox are expected to be cautious with Grissom to avoid further aggravating his hamstring injuries, which have restricted him to just 23 games this season.
“Given our current roster situation, we believe we’re in a good position,” Cora said. “We know his potential and that he’s getting back to his true form, which is crucial. We’ll make a decision when necessary, but we recognize that he’s still a valuable player.”
In his last seven games in Triple-A, Grissom has posted a .211/.318/.211 slash line, with four hits, three walks, and five strikeouts.
Cora also mentioned that Chris Martin felt good after playing catch on Monday night and is eligible to be activated from the injured list on Wednesday. Although Cora didn’t confirm it, he did note that Martin remained with the team in Kansas City.
