Texas EDGE Trey Moore Shines in Fall Practice
Among the defensive players making an early impact in Texas’ fall practice, redshirt junior and UTSA transfer Trey Moore has been particularly impressive.
During the fourth practice of the preseason, held on Saturday night at DKR (Aug. 3), Texas football intensified its training by adding shoulder pads, marking the most physical practice so far.
Trey Moore has emerged as a standout leader in the EDGE position for Texas this fall. Though it wasn’t the first practice in full pads, the session was noted for its high energy and competitiveness.
Reports indicate that the Texas defense delivered its best performance yet in team drills since preseason camp started on July 31. The defense not only put pressure on the quarterbacks during situational scrimmages and simulated live-game settings but also secured a couple of interceptions.
Redshirt freshman Arch Manning and true freshman Trey Owens were the quarterbacks intercepted during the scrimmage drills on Saturday night.
Among the pass rushers, true freshman Colin Simmons and redshirt junior Trey Moore were particularly impactful. According to OTF’s Bobby Burton (premium content), Simmons posed significant challenges for Texas’ offensive tackles during pass protection drills over the weekend.
Moore, however, may have been the most effective player in the front seven during team drills. He also performed exceptionally well in one-on-one pass rush drills on both Friday and Saturday.
A team source reportedly described Moore as a “freak” based on his performance early in preseason camp. His athleticism and disruptive presence were evident during spring drills when he first enrolled.
What stood out in this practice report was Moore’s ability to challenge junior offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. in one-on-one drills. Banks, known for his size and skill in pass protection, rarely faces consistent challenges from Texas EDGE players, making Moore’s performance even more noteworthy.
Moore has quickly established himself as a formidable force in Texas’ front seven as the team prepares for the SEC season. His addition from the transfer portal and UTSA has proven to be a significant boost for the Longhorns ahead of the 2024 season.
Moore’s versatility along the defensive front will be crucial for Pete Kwiatkowski and the Longhorns this fall, posing serious challenges for opposing offensive lines and quarterbacks at the line of scrimmage.
