Bam Adebayo Explores New Sport While Representing Team USA
Bam Adebayo, taking a break from his duties with Team USA, has found an intriguing new Olympic sport to explore.
What do the stars of Team USA Men’s Basketball do during their downtime at the Olympics? A recent video circulating on social media offers a humorous glimpse. Miami Heat star and Team USA member Bam Adebayo is seen trying his hand at a surprising sport: fencing. Could we possibly see Adebayo compete in another Olympic event by 2028?
Bam Adebayo’s Venture into Fencing
In a video shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Adebayo is seen learning the fundamentals of fencing during a break from Team USA’s activities at the Paris Olympics. The clip shows him receiving instruction from British-American fencer Miles Chamley-Watson, who guides Adebayo on proper stances and body positioning in fencing. Adebayo even dons the full fencing attire, complete with gloves and a face mask.
“You’re ready for the Olympics!” Chamley-Watson humorously remarks at one point.
The video concludes with Chamley-Watson signing Adebayo’s sneakers. “It’s funny because when I first mentioned fencing, he was the first to be like, ‘Nah, bro, I got you,'” Adebayo recalls. By the end of the video, viewers might wonder, “What if the Heat star decided to pursue a different sport in the next Olympics?”
After all, former NBA player Chase Budinger recently made his Olympic beach volleyball debut, following a seven-season career in the NBA.
Team USA’s Olympic Journey
Adebayo has been a key contributor to Team USA’s success, helping them secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics with a victory over South Sudan. Leading the bench squad, Adebayo scored 18 points on 8-10 shooting, while teammates Kevin Durant and Anthony Edwards added 14 and 13 points, respectively, and LeBron James chipped in with 12 points. This win ensured Team USA’s No. 1 seed in Group C with a 3-0 record, alongside Canada, France, and Germany in their pursuit of Olympic gold.
Team USA is set to face Puerto Rico on Saturday. Although Puerto Rico has already been eliminated from medal contention, Team USA remains focused on maintaining their winning momentum. The last time they faced Puerto Rico in the Olympics was in 2004, where they suffered a surprising 92-73 loss in Athens, eventually settling for a bronze medal. A win over Puerto Rico this time would improve their chances of securing a favorable matchup in the knockout round.
Head coach Steve Kerr commended his team’s efforts, saying, “We’ve got 12 guys who are all capable of dominating. Every night is going to be a little different, but we like our chances with the number of great players we have on our roster.”
