New Red Sox Catcher Reflects on His First Big Moment in a Walk-Off Victory…
*”It didn’t have to be that tough.”*
Danny Jansen made his debut as the Red Sox catcher in a thrilling walk-off win against the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park on Wednesday.
In his first standout moment with Boston, Jansen delivered a crucial single to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning, driving in Dominic Smith and tying the game at 2-2.
“It felt great,” Jansen shared with reporters at Fenway. “I was just trying to contribute, looking for a good pitch to bring (Dominic) home. It ended up being a fastball on the outside.”
Jansen finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate and also made a highlight-worthy play in the top of the ninth inning, catching a foul ball in dramatic fashion to keep the game tied.
“I think this moment will make for some good memories, and we’ll have a laugh about it,” Jansen said. “It really didn’t need to be that difficult.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora praised Jansen for how he handled his first game behind the plate for Boston.
“He had a good game behind the plate. It’s not an easy task, especially working with the relievers,” Cora told reporters. “The communication between him, pitching coach Andrew Bailey, game planning coordinator Jason Varitek, and even during the game with Connor Wong, was excellent. He did a fantastic job.”
