Texas football is now a member of the SEC, which feels strange, especially since they won the Big 12 title less than nine months ago.
Going into the 2024 season, Texas is surprisingly considered a top contender for the SEC title, despite past disappointments after claiming to be “back.”
This time, however, things seem different. Head coach Steve Sarkisian has built a strong team, and the Longhorns made it to the College Football Playoff in 2023, where they lost to Washington in an exciting semifinal.
To reach the playoffs again and win their first national title since Vince Young’s era, Texas must win these three crucial games:
3. At Michigan (Sept. 7)
The big question is whether Texas is a true national title contender, and the answer may come when they face the defending national champions, Michigan, in Ann Arbor.
To prove they belong at the top, the Longhorns need to beat a team like Michigan on the road, especially after defeating Alabama in Tuscaloosa last year.
With Michigan losing key players like JJ McCarthy, Blake Corum, and coach Jim Harbaugh, Texas has a prime opportunity to show its growth.
2. At Texas A&M (Nov. 30)
Surprisingly, Texas’ first SEC schedule doesn’t include many daunting games, making the rivalry match against a rebuilding Texas A&M team on the road particularly significant.
College Station is a challenging venue, and this game could be more critical for Texas than the Red River Rivalry. If Texas is vying for an SEC title game spot and a playoff berth, a victory in this hostile environment is essential.
1. Georgia (Oct. 19)
The toughest and most important game for Texas in 2024 is against Georgia. This matchup, potentially a playoff eliminator, will be crucial for the Longhorns, especially since it will be played at home.
Although both teams could still make the playoff and the SEC title game with a loss, Texas needs to capitalize on home-field advantage.
A win against Georgia would make a significant statement nationally and could even propel Texas to the top spot in the rankings.
