Yankees Acquire Jazz Chisholm Jr. from Marlins for Three Minor Leaguers
In an effort to revitalize their struggling team, the New York Yankees traded for Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins on Saturday. In exchange, the Yankees sent three minor league players: catcher Agustin Ramirez, infielder Jared Serna, and infielder Abrahan Ramirez.
New York’s season has taken a downturn, with the team holding a 10-23 record after a promising 50-22 start. The Yankees have faced issues with their starting pitching and have relied heavily on Aaron Judge and Juan Soto due to injuries to Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo. Both DJ LeMahieu and Alex Verdugo are also in slumps.
Chisholm, an All-Star second baseman in 2022, has primarily played center field over the past two seasons. This year, he’s hitting .249 with 13 home runs and 50 RBIs, and holds a career average of .246 with 66 homers and 205 RBIs over five seasons. Chisholm also has 22 stolen bases this season, nearly matching his career high.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised Chisholm’s talent and versatility, noting his athleticism, speed, and power. Chisholm, earning $2,625,000 after losing arbitration with the Marlins, will be eligible for arbitration again after the 2024 and 2025 seasons and can become a free agent following the 2026 World Series.
LeMahieu, a two-time batting champion, made his season debut on May 28 after breaking his right foot during spring training. He is currently hitting .178 with one home run and 12 RBIs in 135 at-bats, and his .495 OPS is one of the lowest among players with 100 or more plate appearances.
Verdugo’s performance has also declined, batting .160 with one home run and seven RBIs since June 15. Additionally, rookie first baseman Ben Rice has struggled, going 4 for 50 since hitting three homers on July 7.
As for the traded minor leaguers, Agustin Ramirez, 22, hit .269 with 20 home runs and 69 RBIs this year at Double-A and Triple-A. Jared Serna, also 22, batted .253 with 13 home runs and 58 RBIs at High-A Hudson Valley. Abrahan Ramirez, 19, hit .348 with two home runs and 24 RBIs for the Florida Complex League Yankees.
