Edmonton Oilers Hire Stan Bowman as GM Amid Controversy
The Edmonton Oilers have appointed Stan Bowman as their new general manager, facing significant backlash from fans. Many criticized the decision, highlighting ongoing issues in hockey related to ‘rape culture’ and the ‘old boys’ club’ mentality.
Bowman’s first day is anticipated to be challenging, given the team’s high expectations after narrowly missing the Stanley Cup in the last season. With a strong roster, an effective head coach in Kris Knoblauch, and a generational talent in Connor McDavid, fans see the team as ready for success. Bowman, however, must navigate immense pressure as anything less than a Stanley Cup win will be deemed a failure.
Bowman’s journey back to a GM role hasn’t been easy. His tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks ended in 2021 following a sexual assault scandal involving Kyle Beach and then-video coach Brad Aldrich. The scandal led to Bowman, head coach Joel Quenneville, and assistant GM Al MacIsaac being suspended from the NHL for two years. Reinstated on July 1, Bowman’s hiring by the Oilers appears to have been planned in advance.
During the announcement, Oilers hockey operations CEO Jeff Jackson addressed the controversy, acknowledging the mishandling of the situation in 2010 and Bowman’s responsibility. Jackson emphasized Bowman’s efforts over the past two and a half years to educate himself, notably working with Sheldon Kennedy, a leading advocate against abuse in sports.
Despite Kennedy’s support, the fanbase remains skeptical. Bowman acknowledged their concerns, stating, “I respect the way that they feel. It’s going to be my job to try to win them over.” He aims to rebuild trust, starting with an admission of his past mistakes.

Bowman expressed regret for his inadequate response in 2010 and emphasized his commitment to learning and improving. Kennedy, after working closely with Bowman, believes he is dedicated to change, although the journey is ongoing.
Why on earth would the Oilers hire Stan Bowman? Terrible business decision. Astonishingly tone deaf. Old school hockey at it again.

As Bowman begins his tenure with the Oilers, the focus will be on his actions and decisions, particularly regarding star forward Leon Draisaitl’s contract extension, as he strives to win over a wary fanbase and lead the team to success.
