Martin Necas: Carolina Journalist Considers One-Year Contract…
The situation with Martin Necas in Carolina is quite fascinating. The 25-year-old forward, currently a restricted free agent, remains unsigned. While trade rumors have circulated recently, a contract signing appears more likely than trading his negotiating rights. A sign-and-trade deal is also a possibility to facilitate a transaction.
Today, during the Jason Gregor Show on Sports 1440, a reporter from The Athletic covering the Carolina Hurricanes discussed Necas.

Cory Lavalette doesn’t see Necas as an ideal fit for the Canes but shared his views on a potential contract between Necas and the team. He believes it would likely be a one-year deal, as neither party is interested in a long-term agreement. The annual salary would be approximately $5.5 to $6 million. Initially, this figure seems low, even for a single year.
However, Lavalette explains that this makes sense when considering the details. Necas has tremendous offensive potential and could consistently be a 30-goal scorer, nearing a point-per-game pace. His puck-handling skills are remarkable, and Lavalette expressed interest in a fastest skater competition between Connor McDavid and Necas.
Defensively, Necas has room for improvement. “He’s so fast with the puck, but his lack of defensive intensity can be frustrating. If he wants to play in Carolina, he needs to commit to playing intensely both with and without the puck,” said Lavalette.
Necas desires a larger role and prefers to play center. However, as Lavalette notes, Rod Brind’Amour’s coaching style doesn’t grant significant center minutes easily. Necas must take on more responsibility to reach his full potential.
