Denver Nuggets Reportedly Considered Trading Key Player for Paul George
The Denver Nuggets seriously considered trading one of their core players in a potential blockbuster deal for former Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George, according to NBA insiders.
Despite entering the 2024 NBA Playoffs as strong contenders for a second consecutive championship—thanks to a strong season finish and Nikola Jokic’s third MVP award—the Nuggets’ title defense was halted by Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves. With their top players in their primes, the Nuggets are looking to make roster upgrades to capitalize on their championship window.
Recent reports have surfaced indicating that Denver was among the teams involved in the Paul George trade talks last month. Although George eventually signed with the Philadelphia 76ers after opting out of his Clippers contract, a new report has shed light on what the Nuggets were willing to offer.
Michael Porter Jr. Considered in Trade for Paul George
Yahoo Sports NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on Monday that the Nuggets considered trading Michael Porter Jr. for Paul George. Porter played a significant role in helping the Nuggets win the 2023 championship but may have reached his peak performance, leading Denver to reconsider his long-term value.
Michael Porter Jr. Stats (2023-24):
– Points Per Game (PPG): 16.7
– Rebounds Per Game (RPG): 7.0
– Assists Per Game (APG): 1.5
– Steals Per Game (SPG): 0.7
– Three-Point Percentage (3PT%): 40%
Porter was one of the top contributors for the Nuggets in the 2023-24 season. However, the organization may now regret the five-year, $179 million contract they offered him in 2022.
Nuggets Rookie DaRon Holmes II Undergoes Surgery
In other news, Denver rookie DaRon Holmes II had surgery on his injured right Achilles tendon following an injury during the Nuggets’ NBA Summer League debut. The surgery was performed by Dr. Kenneth Hunt at UCHealth Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Denver. There is currently no timeline for Holmes’ return.
Holmes, who played college basketball at Dayton, scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds in his debut game against the Los Angeles Clippers. Initially selected by the Phoenix Suns as the 22nd pick in the draft, the Nuggets acquired his rights in exchange for the 28th pick, the 56th pick, and two future second-round picks. Denver had high hopes for Holmes due to his versatility and recognition as the Atlantic 10 co-player and defensive player of the year.
