Charania reported that Thompson would be the “guaranteed starter” at the small forward position. With Derrick Jones Jr. signing with the LA Clippers, it was already likely that Thompson would take the starting spot, and Charania’s report confirms this.
Last season with the Warriors, Thompson averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 0.6 steals per game, shooting 43.2 percent from the field and 38.7 percent from three-point range. It was the first season since his rookie year that Thompson didn’t start every game, but now he has the opportunity to do so with the Mavericks.
Thompson acknowledges that he may not be the same defender he was in his prime, but he remains a formidable shooter. He is the perfect addition alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, set to enhance the Mavericks’ already dynamic offense.
Thompson’s presence on the floor will create more space for Doncic and Irving to drive to the basket, as opponents will need to respect his shooting ability. If defenders leave him open, he will have plenty of opportunities for uncontested shots.
