The Dallas Stars selected Emil Hemming with the 29th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. Hemming, standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 205 pounds, isn’t known for being a physical player, as evidenced by his zero penalty minutes in 40 games with TPS Turku in the Finnish men’s league. However, his strong defensive play and reliability make him a coach’s favorite.
Despite modest stats of seven goals and 11 points, Hemming has demonstrated his scoring ability with 18 points in 13 games for TPS U-20 and six points in five games for Finland at the U-18 tournament. Given the chance, he can produce offensively.
Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff sees Hemming as a potential bottom-six forward who can outmuscle opponents while remaining disciplined. If Hemming improves his skating, he could take on a more significant role in the NHL. At the very least, his work ethic should secure him a spot in the deeper lines.
The Stars will need to monitor Hemming’s offensive development. If he can harness his potential to drive the net and create offense, he could become a “modern power forward” who uses size and intelligence rather than physicality to outmaneuver defenders.
Hemming’s defensive skills will earn him respect from coaches and more opportunities to advance in North America when he makes the transition. How he utilizes these opportunities will determine his future success.
